Research tells us that the human organism needs 6 to 8
respectful, loving touches a day to survive.
We know that premature infants gain more weight in the first 2 weeks of
life when prescribed “tactile, kinesthetic stimulation” (loving touch). Touch to a premature infant means weight gain
– weight gain means life. Touch
heals. The pains of life dissipate when
we are hugged and comforted.
Touch is our universal communication. It crosses all linguistic and religious
boundaries. All prejudice, fear, and hatred crumble in
the presence of compassion. Touch is as
essential as breath. Without breath we
suffocate, without touch we wither and die.
Deep within each of us there is a need to be touched,
comforted, supported and loved. We need
this for each other. We must give and
receive loving touch.
